From 1964 to December 1991, the USSR included 20 Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics (ASSR) - self-governing republics of soviets, which are one of the forms of autonomy for national minorities inhabiting the territory of the Union.

In all ASSR in the USSR there was its own state language, in addition to Russian.
